Embracing Authenticity: A Morning in Environmental Court
Good morning, everyone. Today’s post comes from a place of nerves and reflection as I prepare to appear in Environmental Court at 9am. A month ago, a sheriff showed up at my door and handed me a civil warrant. Having law enforcement knock on your door and say, “I’m looking for Molly Booker,” is nerve-rattling to say the least. My infraction? An open shed at a rental property.
Waking up early this morning at 4:30am, my mind immediately went to court. I felt my stomach tighten and my body tense as I thought about appearing before a judge. This taps into a deep-seated fear of mine: being wrong, getting in trouble. And here I am, headed to court.
As I was getting ready for my day, I found myself debating what to wear. What is the required dress for court? Pants? A dress shirt? I also remembered the heat advisory for Middle Tennessee, with the heat index reaching 109 this afternoon. Pants? No way.
This internal debate reminded me of how often I dress to impress, conforming to expectations. Each time I do, I lose a bit of myself. Today, I decided to show up as me—in shorts, my Nike Airs, and my favorite shirt. Is this showing authenticity or disrespect? Where is the line when we dress?
Research shows that the clothes we wear significantly impact our self-expression and individuality. Fashion psychologist Carolyn Mair says, “What we wear affects how we think, feel, and act.” When we dress authentically, we align more closely with our true selves and feel more confident and comfortable. However, societal expectations often pressure us to conform, potentially stifling our uniqueness and self-expression.
Oscar Wilde once said, “Be yourself; everyone else is already taken.” Dressing authentically allows us to express our individuality and resist the urge to conform. However, societal norms and expectations can sometimes clash with our desire for authenticity.
Today, my choice to wear shorts and my favorite shirt to court may not please the judge, but it’s a step toward embracing my true self. This might cost me in terms of not meeting formal expectations, but I believe that showing up as myself is worth it.
So here’s to authenticity and self-expression, even when it’s nerve-wracking and challenging. We all deserve to show up as our true selves, no matter the situation.
