The Art of Letting Go: Revamping My Morning Routine for a Heaven on Earth Experience

Good morning, fellow seekers of joy and authenticity!

Today, I want to talk about something deeply personal and transformative: the evolution of my morning routine. Like many of you, I’ve clung to rituals that once filled me with energy and purpose. But what happens when these routines no longer spark joy? When they start feeling more like a chain than a liberating dance?

This shift in my perspective was partly inspired by an episode of Martha Beck’s podcast, “Bewildered,” specifically the one titled “All the Way to Heaven is Heaven.” It struck a chord with me as I wrestled with my morning habits. For years, I started my days the same way: journaling, meditating, and sipping coffee in the quiet of dawn. These activities used to ground me, connecting me with something greater than myself. But recently, they’ve felt more burdensome than uplifting.

I wake up bursting with energy, akin to a pinball machine lit up and buzzing, ready for action. Initially, I channel this vigor into menial tasks: emptying the dishwasher, taking out the trash, even cleaning up after the dogs. While ticking these tasks off my list offers a brief hit of satisfaction, it quickly morphs into resentment. This isn’t how I want to start my day.

It’s been a tough realization—letting go of a routine that has been a part of me for over 15 years. Yet, the truth is, just like the clothes from 15 years ago don’t fit me anymore, neither does this routine. It’s time for an upgrade.

In recent weeks, I’ve learned that embracing movement first thing—be it yoga, running, or a simple stretch—realigns my energy and prepares me for the day. Followed by a cold plunge, I find myself invigorated and truly awake. This change has been pivotal. It may not work for everyone—like my fiery friend Joanna, who shivers at the thought of cold! But it works for me.

Variety has become the spice of my mornings. Some days it’s mantra, others it’s a walk; I love the surprise element, much like drawing a tarot card. It keeps each morning fresh and exciting. Planning the week in advance with my Silk and Sonder journal, which offers new themes monthly, helps keep my mornings interesting and aligned with my evolving needs.

Another pivotal change was in my workspace. My office, once a room of ‘responsibility energy,’ felt draining. It was filled with bills, documents, and serious vibes. A creative overhaul was necessary. I moved my desk into a family space, turning it into an area alive with legos, comics, bright colors, and an art station. The shift in energy was immediate and transformative.

So, here’s my question to you: Does your daily routine energize or drain you? Does it feel expansive or confining? Perhaps it’s time to let go of what no longer serves you and embrace something that brings you back to life.

I’d love to hear about your routines and if you’re considering a change. Share your thoughts and experiences in the comments below. Let’s inspire each other to find our unique paths to daily heaven!
