Magic Is in the Hot Mess

Christmas lights. Oh, the hassle of it all. Storing the bins of decorations, untangling miles of twinkling chaos, climbing ladders, cursing at those damn strands that refuse to light up. It’s a universal pain in the ass. We’ve all been Clark Griswold, pouring our hearts into creating a masterpiece only to have it go dark.

And yet, we do it. We untangle, we climb, we light. Why?

When I moved from Colorado to Nashville, I paired down just about everything—furniture, books, kitchen gadgets. You name it, I let it go. But the Christmas stuff? That stayed. It’s a hassle, but it’s worth it.

I have a dear friend who’s in the middle of a hot mess. She’s asking herself the big, scary questions:

  • Who am I?

  • Where do I belong?

  • Should I move back home?

Life feels up in the air for her, so this year, she decided to skip the tree. “What’s the point?” she said. But sometimes the point is exactly what we don’t feel like doing.

My wife Kelly and I staged a Christmas intervention. She went to the store with our friend and refused to give her keys back until she bought a tree. It sounds ridiculous, but the result? Transformative.

That tree did more than bring a little Christmas to her place—it gave her something to feel grounded about. It became a Christmasy place to call home, even in the midst of all the questions.

Christmas isn’t about the efficiency of skipping it, or saving time, or sparing yourself the hassle. It’s about the extra sparkle—a celebration of joy and light, even when (especially when) life feels messy.

We all deserve that. Regardless of where we are in life, how much money we have, or who we’re with or without. The magic isn’t in having a perfect holiday setup—it’s in the feeling it brings.

Put up a Charlie Brown Christmas tree. String lights in your favorite plant. Pour your coffee into a mug that makes you smile. These tiny acts matter. They remind us we’re worthy of the extra sparkle, even in the mess.

One of my favorite things is a Charlie Brown Christmas mug I snagged on sale years ago. It’s nothing fancy, but it makes me happier every time I use it—for coffee, green juice, or whatever. It brings the magic home in the simplest way.

What’s that thing for you? What brings the magic into your home, your life, your season?

Do you go all out with the decorations? Is there a tree in your home this year? Or maybe you’re finding magic in small, unexpected ways.

🎄 Survey Time:

  • Christmas lights: Yes or no?

  • Tree: Real, fake, or none?

  • How do you add a little extra sparkle to your holiday season?

Let’s make this season one of celebration, cheer, and unapologetic joy—because we all need it, deserve it, and are worthy of it.

Drop your answers in the comments, and let’s keep the magic alive. ✨
